James Island, South Carolina – with its centuries-old oak trees, pristine salt marshes, panoramic views of the Charleston harbor, and ideal proximity to both downtown Charleston, SC and Folly Beach – has emerged as one of the Lowcountry’s most desirable places to live. Both forts were located on the island's northern shore. Most of the fighting in the Charleston area during the rest of the Civil War occurred on James Island and Morris Island, as Union troops tried to invade Charleston from the south, from their base on Folly Beach. All of these efforts, including notable assaults on historic Fort Lamar and Battery Wagner, were defeated. Today, all of the conveniences and most of the pleasures of a larger city can be found on James Island including some of Charleston’s most celebrated and eclectic dining venues. The island’s wide variety of housing from luxurious high-end waterfront property along the harbor, creeks, rivers, and marshes to small bungalows with all the charm of yesterday can be found on the island.
